2024: the year of collaboration and partnership
Happy New Year and welcome to the January issue of PME. In this issue, we look at a number of different areas, from improving patient outcomes and the need for better mental health care to the benefits of precision medicine.
In his interview on page 28, Danny Buckland talks to Ed Piper, Medical & Scientific Affairs Director at AstraZeneca UK, about how the company is working to improve patient outcomes. As healthcare organisations face huge societal challenges, 2024 will be a year where the focus is on collaboration and partnership to drive mutual benefit, underpinning a growing structure of collaborations designed to destress healthcare systems and identify new, leaner ways of working.
In our second interview in this issue, Joanne Kanaan, CEO and Co-Founder of Omini, talks about the potential role of precision medicine in chronic diseases and the challenges patients face in managing their conditions. As Joanne says: “It is estimated that six out of ten people over the age of 60 suffers from at least one chronic condition, and four out of ten suffer from two or more. In England particularly, approximately 15 million people have a long- term condition.” Read more on page 16.
In the article on page 18 by Tamara Werner-Kiechle, Therapeutic Area Lead for Neuroscience and Pulmonary Hypertension at Janssen EMEA, she focuses on the need for better care for those struggling with their mental health, saying that “40 million people in the European Union (EU) alone live with depression, yet three out of four say they don’t receive adequate treatment for this” and that “it’s time for policymakers, healthcare systems and society to do more and start taking action”.
Looking ahead, our February issue will focus on diversity and inclusion in the pharma industry – how much has changed and how much more work is there to be done? If you would like to make your voice heard on this topic, please get in touch at sales@pmlive.com
