Icon promotes Brendan Buckley to chief medical officer

In his new role he will serve as the CRO's lead medical expert

Icon Brendan BuckleyDublin-based clinical research organisation (CRO) Icon has promoted Professor Brendan Buckley to chief medical officer.

Prof Buckley joined the company as its 2011 acquisition of clinical trechnology firm Firecrest Clinical, which he co-founded and where he was senior vice president of medical affairs.

In his new role, which will see him join the company’s executive leadership team, he will serve as Icon’s lead medical expert, representing the company’s position on key scientific, ethical and medical governance matters.

He will also be tasked with providing guidance and oversight to company’s medical and scientific groups.

Icon’s CEO Ciaran Murray said: “Brendan’s wealth of experience both as an advisor to European regulatory agencies and a physician with over 30 years of clinical trial experience, will help us advance our clients’ products through their development pipelines and ensure Icon studies continue to be performed to the highest scientific and ethical standards.”

An endocrinologist with over 30 years’ experience, Prof Buckley has been a board member of the Irish Medicines Board and of the European Medical Agency’s (EMA) Scientific Advisory Group for Diabetes and Endocrinology since 2005.

Brendan is Clinical Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology at the School of Medicine, University College Cork (UCC), Ireland, and also chairs several independent Data and Safety Monitoring Boards for medium to large cardio-metabolic and rare disease clinical studies.
