Imagine More for the reporting of consensus programme outputs

The Bedrock team reflects on the latest published guidance in the development of consensus programmes

As an agency that Imagines More for medical communications and publications, and delivers award-winning consensus programmes, the timely, compliant and accurate reporting of consensus data is something that the Bedrock team is fully committed to. Until recently, no formal guidance has been available on this topic and research shows that consensus methods are often not optimally reported.1

The excellent work done by William T Gattrell and colleagues in developing the first reporting guideline related to consensus methods used in biomedical research, called ACCORD (AcCcurate COnsensus Reporting Document), is helping to provide much-needed guidance.2 The publication and the related tools, e.g. checklist (downloadable version here) and associated explanation and elaboration publication, provide an essential framework for how authors and publication/medical communication professionals should approach developing consensus programmes and publishing their outputs.3

Bedrock routinely supports consensus programmes to enable better understanding and an expert-driven approach to disease management and we are thrilled to see this guidance published. We truly believe it will support authors and publication professionals in developing consensus manuscripts with improved transparency of reporting and clarity regarding the methods used to reach agreement. More consistency in how consensus programmes are reported will enable experts and other stakeholders to create guidance that can optimally support clinical decision-making in areas where evidence is currently lacking or non-existent. Consistent reporting formats will make it easier for international stakeholders to understand and adopt the recommendations, promoting uniformity in clinical practice and, ultimately, improving patient care on a global scale.

To find out more about how the ACCORD guidelines were developed (using a Delphi method consensus approach, of course!), you can hear from Niall Harrison, one of the authors, here and further information on ACCORD and all associated tools and publications can be found on the International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP) website here.
