Europe Celebrates the Heart of Healthcare Decision-Making as Laboratory Medicine Professionals Take Centre Stage

Today, the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) proudly marks European Laboratory Day, celebrating the professionals at the heart of healthcare decision making. Across Europe, laboratories will open their doors to showcase the science, innovation and dedication that underpin medical decisions and shape better health outcomes for all.

In 2025, as Europe faces growing healthcare pressures and embraces the rapid rise of artificial intelligence and digital diagnostics, the role of laboratory medicine professionals has never been more vital. Their expertise forms the foundation of every stage of patient care, from prevention and diagnosis to treatment and monitoring, making them central to timely, accurate and informed healthcare decisions.

It is estimated that over two-thirds of all medical decisions worldwide rely on laboratory test results. Behind each one is a team of skilled professionals ensuring accuracy, safety and trust. This year’s theme, “Heart of Healthcare”, shines a light on these often-unseen experts whose work bridges science and clinical care, transforming data into lifesaving insight.

“Beyond the science, laboratory medicine professionals are the people at the heart of healthcare decision-making, turning results into meaningful care,” said Tara Rolić, EFLM Executive Committee Member of the Communications Division. “Their work drives diagnosis, guides treatment and supports the innovation that keeps Europe’s healthcare systems resilient and responsive. As new technologies such as artificial intelligence reshape diagnostics, their expertise ensures these tools are used safely, ethically and effectively for the benefit of patients.”

European Laboratory Day reflects the EU’s renewed commitment to building resilient and innovative health systems, from the EU4Health Programme to the 2025 Medical Countermeasures and Stockpiling Strategies. These initiatives recognise the central role of diagnostics and laboratory medicine in safeguarding public health. The ongoing implementation of the In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices Regulation (IVDR) further strengthens Europe’s focus on quality, safety and trust, values that laboratory professionals put into practice every day.

The EFLM invites policymakers, healthcare organisations and the public to join in recognising laboratory medicine professionals across Europe, celebrating the science, skill and humanity at the heart of every healthcare decision.
