Always Be in a Growth Mindset: Chief Strategy Officer Christina Hoffman’s Return to Her Education Roots

July 19, 2024 |

Medicine is always changing, and the career of Medscape Education’s Chief Strategy Officer, Christina Hoffman, is no exception. The 17-year Medscape veteran recently said goodbye to her role as leader of the Medscape Medical Affairs division and has rejoined Medscape Education as Chief Strategy Officer, as the company leads the industry in transforming education.

“My time in the Medical Affairs division is close to my heart,” Chris Hoffman said of the change. “But the Education division is where I started. Rejoining feels like coming home!”

Education has long been a passion for Chris, stemming from her days studying biology and public health.

“Education and improving health have been a consistent theme throughout my career. I knew going to medical school wasn’t the right path for me, but I still wanted to do something that would improve health. I began my career in health education at a rural Kansas health department. Following that, I transitioned to the national nonprofit health sector, where I dedicated eight years of service. Eventually, I made the move to the pharmaceutical industry, assuming a role akin to a medical science liaison (MSL), primarily focused on cardiovascular guideline educational outreach.  From there I moved into MedComms, where I worked with theHeart.org, a part of the WebMD/Medscape family.”

Chris’s return to Medscape Education signifies a pivotal moment in the company’s evolution, which is set to transform the CME landscape.

“I’ve dedicated the past three years to leading the Medical Affairs team. The clear separation and firewall between the Medical Affairs and Medical Education departments ensure the integrity and impartiality of our educational content. As a result, my involvement with the Education team during this time was primarily observational, admiring their remarkable accomplishments from a distance. This dynamic remains unchanged in my current role, as these two divisions operate in distinct and separate spheres within the Medscape ecosystem. I take immense pride in the achievements of the Medical Affairs team and I know I have left it in very safe hands. Today, I’m invigorated by this new opportunity within education, to lead and innovate. We’re capable of doing things that people in our industry never thought possible. The technology and tools, the incredible dedication of the team, the powerful methodologies…we’re the only ones able to combine those into game-changing impact and insights. It’s exciting and I’m thrilled to be back with my Medscape Education colleagues.”

This year marks the start of a new era in Chris’s remarkable career, and she’s more than happy to share her tips for success.

“People, but especially women, often get asked how to balance their work and personal lives. For me, it’s about maintaining clear boundaries between the two. Whether giving a presentation at work or reading a book at bedtime with the kids, it’s been critically important to protect my time to maintain balance and be meaningfully present for both professional commitments and personal moments.

In the journey of career advancement, cultivating a growth mindset is paramount. Identify your strengths and amplify them. Approach every task with pride and passion. Contribute ideas, collaborate with others, and embrace the discomfort of stepping into the unknown—fear is a natural part of growth. With each step in your career, be thoughtful, be strategic, use your time with precision, but remain open to unexpected opportunities.”

Together, Medscape Education and Chris Hoffman are poised to shape the future of medical education, fueled by innovation, collaboration, and a shared commitment to excellence and improving patient care.
