The world of medical device technology is constantly evolving. From wearable devices to diagnostic technology, clinicians have more options than ever for monitoring and assessing their patients’ health. The accessibility of medical devices can have benefits not only for individual patients, but for health systems as a whole, as well as access to care. For example, “Effective and sustainable wearable devices are bringing about positive changes for not only individuals but also societies at large… Moreover, they provide remarkable means for reducing the burden on systems and costs associated with health care owing to [an] aging society.”1 Among the many devices now on the market are wearables that allow patients to monitor their cardiac rhythms and look for issues such as atrial fibrillation, allowing for real-time care.
Dr Hansa Bhargava, Medscape Education CMO, has extensive experience with medical device technology, including its use for continuity of care, research, and diagnosis and intervention. In her work with WebMD, she helped provide 24/7 information via a mobile app that she developed with a team, while also working with non-profit organizations on SMS texting for postpartum care and innovative research methods using Apple Research Kit.
“The use of device technology ideally positions us to help close gaps in care,” says Dr Bhargava. From telemedicine to digital diagnostics, wearables, and digital biomarkers, it’s important that we all work together to make sure that workflow integration on the clinician side happens smoothly and that we work toward equity and access for all patients at the forefront. To keep clinicians current on the latest advances, education will be more important than ever.”
