The Lasting Impact of Cytomegalovirus Education

Education on the signs, symptoms, and potential complications of cytomegalovirus (CMV) is in need of constant development, as this common disease affects nearly 1 in 3 children by age 5 and over half of adults by age 40. New treatment options are being developed for patients at risk, including patients who have recently undergone organ transplantation, but these developments are not yet well-known among clinicians.

Recently, Medscape Education has sought to close these learning gaps by providing engaging education for infectious disease (ID) clinicians. This education has made a substantial impact, increasing knowledge and competence among clinicians and leading to publications at numerous conferences and congresses. Some of the poster presentations Medscape Education has given include:

  • Critical Care Congress of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, February 2020, in Orlando, Florida (2 presentations)
  • ID Week 2019, October 2019, in Washington, DC (4 presentations), and ID Week 2018, October 2018, in San Francisco, California (4 presentations)
  • National Hemophilia Foundation annual meeting, October 2019, in Anaheim, California (2 presentations)
  • Annual Congress of the European Hematology Association, June 2019, in Amsterdam (2 presentations)
  • Annual Congress of the European Association for Haemophilia and Allied Disorders, February 2019, in Prague, Czech Republic (2 presentations)
  • Annual Meeting and Exposition of the American Society of Hematology, December 2018, in San Diego, California (1 presentation)

One of the ways Medscape Education engages with learners is through symposia at medical meetings and congresses around the world. These symposia bring together leading faculty in infectious diseases, allowing them to share critical updates on the diagnosis, prevention, and management of CMV, and giving physician learners the opportunity to interact through polling questions, interactive slides, and Q&A with the faculty panelists.

The high visibility and quality of these events have attracted large numbers of learners, both in person at the conference and through virtual simulcasts of the event. This hybrid approach allows more physicians to be reached and expands the impact of the programs. Some recent symposia include:

  • ID Week 2022 Symposium- Infectious Disease Specialist Perspectives on Cytomegalovirus Management in Transplant Patients: New Data and New Options
  • American Transplant Congress (ATC) 2022 Symposium- Infectious Disease Specialist Perspectives on Cytomegalovirus Management in Transplant Patients: New Data and New Options
  • Transplantation & Cellular Therapy (TCT) Meetings of the American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (ASTCT) and Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) 2023

Total Live-In Person & Virtual Participants: 1,400+

Medscape Education’s 25+ years of expertise in delivering quality education means that programs are positioned to reach the right audience at the right time, providing educational opportunities when learners need them and making them easily accessible. The table below shows activities focused on CVM in transplant patients, which has reached over 18,700+ learners.

Medscape Education ensures not only that education reaches the right learners, but that it is designed with clinical learning goals in mind and makes a significant impact on clinicians.

Among clinicians who participated in one of Medscape’s recent CMV and transplantation educational activities, Challenges and Opportunities in the Transplant Patient: Focus on Improving Care for CMV Infection, survey respondents who saw an average of 7 patients with CMV per month reported that the activity prompted them to make a number of changes1:

87% of participants modified or implemented a new practice or had their practice reinforced due to education, by:

  • Incorporating new agents into practice for the treatment of resistant/refractory CMV based on current data (68%)
  • Implementing a management strategy for resistant or refractory CMV (67%)
  • Collaborating with health system plans and primary payers to update and adopt reimbursement criteria early (64%)

Data from 2 additional programs indicated that1:

  • 44% of clinicians increased their knowledge and competence about the mechanism of action of CMV treatments
  • 43% increased their knowledge and competence about clinical trial data
  • 22% increased their ability to select or individualize CMV treatments based on individual patient characteristics and guidelines

In the future, Medscape Education will continue to develop education focused on closing learning gaps in CMV in order to improve outcomes for patients everywhere.
