Exploring medical education and why it relies on real-world research

Onyx Health’s Head of Medical Education, Sarah Seilly, explains our approach to MedEd and the benefits of tailoring your own

- PMLiVE

HCPs need to complete 50 hours or so of personal development each year, averaging less than an hour per week. But, while that might sound manageable, workers who are already stretched to their limits (due to staff shortages, for one) will really struggle to find the time or energy.

Effective medical education relies on these real-world conditions being considered – and addressed – by training providers.

Sarah Seilly, Head of Medical Education at Onyx Health, a healthcare communications agency and MedEd provider, explores the topic.

“Unfortunately, there’s no magic fix. There are tools and frameworks available to get you started, but these shouldn’t be followed blindly. It’s important that any framework you refer to or base your medical education on is vetted and substantiated.

“Take the learning pyramid. It ranks learning techniques by information retention and has been an accepted teaching principle for decades. But more recently, the source and even existence of the research behind it have been questioned.”1-4

Sarah also shares how Onyx Health developed their own approach to medical education and how it can benefit much more than just mandatory staff development.
