Congenital

A condition present at birth, not generally referring to inherited/genetic disorders. Congenital conditions can be inherited or are developed via environmental factors. Some infections during pregnancy, such as HIV, can be transmitted to a baby and cause a congenital condition. Behaviour of women during pregnancy also determine congenital conditions in infants; alcohol or drug intake, nutritional consumption and placental health can all effect congenital difficulties.
