NHS Foundation Trusts (often referred to as ‘foundation hospitals’) are not-for-profit, public benefit corporations within the framework of the health service. They are independent of Strategic Health Authorities, free from government controls and accountable to their local communities. They provide and develop healthcare services consistent with NHS standards and principles.
