Term to describe the size of a business based on employee numbers, annual turnover, assets and ownership. In the EU a firm is an SME if it has fewer than 250 employees and an annual turnover between €7m and €40m. Medium business have between 50 and 249 employees and small business have up to 49 employees. Small businesses include micro businesses, which can be defined as having up to five employees .
