Merck Serono CEO joins L’Oreal board

Belén Garijo named independent director at beauty company

Belén Garijo Belén Garijo – the present CEO of Merck Serono – has been appointed to the board of beauty company L’Oreal.

Garijo, who took up her current role at pharma company Merck Serono in September last year, will now also serve as an independent director at L’Oreal for a period of four years.

Garijo joined Merck Serono as chief operating officer in 2011. In addition to her current role as CEO she has served as interim global head of R&D at parent company Merck KGaA since the departure of Annalisa Jenkins earlier this year.

Before joining Merck, Garijo served as senior VP, global operations region Europe at Sanofi. During her time at Sanofi, she also took on the role of global integration leader for the company’s acquisition of the biotech Genzyme.

Prior to her career in the industry Garijo worked for six years as a practicing physician.
