An association of producers or consumers who service their own needs by democratic control, distributing profit according to purchases, sales or fixed return on capital.

Co-operative business members include customers, employees, residents, businesses, local residents or a combination of these. Membership is dependent on the legal model applied to the business. Almost any kind of enterprise can run as a co-operative and it is the members who are the beneficiaries of the activities of the business.
