Disease mongering

A term that was coined by a journalist to describe what she saw as the confluence of interests by some doctors, drug companies, patient advocacy groups and media in overstating the severity of illness and the ability of drugs to ‘cure’ them. Advocates of this practice claim that the pharmaceutical industry is only providing the public with data about its options and that actual prescription is a subject to be discussed exclusively between patient and doctor.
